The Grosseto-Prugna Village
Like many of insular villages, Grosseto is divided into several hamlets, namely Vignali, Prugna and very recently Porticcio on the seaside, separated by more than 35 km of the mountain village. In these villages unfortunately forgotten by many people, and falling into silence and indifference, the past is still present.
The principal hamlet, Grosseto, was famous for its vineyards. Today, it shelters a school with 2 classes and more than 40 children; more than 300 people live there throughout the year. As for Prugna, it is the historical heart. Indeed, what village in XVIth century did not have “Casa Forte”, “Torra”, in Prugna. There were a lot, and the lord of manor, the Count Polverelli, had chosen it for his residence. The hamlet, avoided by the secondary road, preserved all its original beauty just like Vignali. The last one preserves its old residences that in spite of the ravages of time deserve the turning.
It is not excessive to say that our countryside churches, even the humblest, the poorest and the most stripped, are beautiful. They express their beauty, not by obeying to the standards and canons of certain conceptions but they respond even more to the Platon’s “Splendour of truth” formula.
The Grosseto village square bears the name of Saint Césaire. It is the church that gave him its name. It is a Roman construction dating from the XIth century. The church square was the old cemetery formerly. There was indeed a tradition to bury the deceased near the church so that water going down the roof sanctifies them when they were underground.

Welcome to Porticcio
Grosseto-Prugna… Porticcio … Almost all of Corsican villages have had their “beach”, a place where at the end of the autumn and during the winter, the villagers have led down their animals to the lowlands where the weather was not such rigorous. I could be impossible to understand Porticcio without apprehending his heart living in Grosseto-Prugna. Thus it is necessary to visit this village located in 32 km from Ajaccio achievable by the national road leading to Bonifacio. Once having passed the Saint-George Col, the road leads down to Grosseto-Prugna.
It is undoubtedly the privileged position on the South Coast of the Gulf of Ajaccio that makes Porticcio an incomparable place for its residents and guests. In 15 minutes from the Napoleon Bonaparte Airport, vis-a-vis the imperial city which roofs, citadel and port we can see on the other gulf coast, Porticcio enjoys indeed an exceptional natural and human framework that confers to the city its reputation of dynamic resort, ideal for the rest, relaxation and various leisure activities, throughout the four seasons of the year.
Porticcio is spread out along the coastline, but it also goes deep into the back country. The residences with luxuriant gardens form the first community’s counterforts. Everyone who goes deeper will be charmed by the smells of jasmine or of honeysuckle, floating in the air at the end of the afternoon. The restaurants and the hotels border the coast, when they are not hidden in the greenery.
Numerous cafes, ice-cream bars, handicraft and commercial shops contribute to community’s animation and, due to their activities, improve the quality of your stay in a completely preserved natural environment. Still, the Porticcio reputation is above all established due to the white sand beaches and soft Mediterranean microclimate. Fine sand beaches extent hemmed in its edges with a transparent delicate blue water which only limit is Ajaccio, and more towards the West, the imposing shape of the Sanguinary Islands with guaranteed spectacle of sunsets always different, but always sumptuous. Perfect for family holidays, the beaches are maintained and cleaned. They seem to be imagined for those who are in love with sea and with various water activities and games.
